One of the most popular videos ever shared on YouTube simply demonstrates how to tie a necktie - a routine process for most. Yet it continues to rack up millions of hits!
While it's possible to learn almost anything these days by watching even the most basic video demos, creating professional training demonstrations and tutorials for online consumption requires a much deeper skill set . . . and considerable experience.
Over the years I have created hundreds of training videos for internal and external clients, serving a broad range of markets including financial, healthcare, application software, entertainment, hospitality, retail, and non-profit. I’ve successfully trained thousands of learners of all skill levels to use everything from graphics software and healthcare applications, to advanced consulting and financial systems, for the cloud and desktop.
While I insist on working closely with SMEs and cross-functional teams to plan any training program, when it comes to creating the media and materials, I prefer to control the entire process myself, from end-to-end. By eliminating as many layers as possible, I can guarantee all the training materials will be of the highest caliber.
Typical toolset for creating training videos includes: WORD (script), Camtasia (recording & NLE), Premiere Pro (special effects)

How we learn today
Videos are portable - available from anywhere, 24/7.
Saves money - 85% of every dollar spent on classroom training is spent on delivering it.
Simplifies complex processes - break down complex ideas, workflows, processes, and concepts.
High engagement - 75% of users are more likely to watch video than read a doc or web article.
Increases retention - only 20% of users remember what they read vs 80% who watch and do.
Versatile - ideal for demonstrating new/existing products, systems, and applications.
Measurable - use sectional quizzes, surveys, and hits to monitor a wide range of user metrics.
Tailored - well suited for branched training different users and skill levels.
Consistent -provides an equal experience for all users.
High quality video training requires careful planning. Scripts must be articulate and decisive. The narrator’s rhythm should sound natural, but measured. Screen captures must be thoughtfully edited to allow each element to flow smoothly from one to another. The pace should conform to the content being presented. Above all, the viewer must be able to assimilate and repeat the entire demonstration the first time around, without confusion or hesitation.
