Do users read manuals?
Odds are if your application or system is more complex than a place mat, you'll want to create some form of documentation to help people learn how to to use it. A well-crafted manual can mean the difference between a positive user experience and a miserable one. However, studies show only 25% of users read product manuals and user guides.
The manuals and user guides I’ve created closely mimic the clarity and brevity found in my training videos. The secret is to focus on the features that introduce value and expeditiously solve the user’s needs. The documentation I design guides novice users through the platform, shares more advanced techniques and shortcuts with experts while anticipating obstacles that might slow down any user’s interaction with the instructions.
Throughout the years I have written, edited, and published a wide range of Help systems, instruction manuals, and user guides supporting dozens of applications, systems, and training sites. The three documents below represent a small sample of this work.
