Animated Site Intro

Runtime - 49 sec

I created this animation to introduce a web site I built for Custom Glass Carvings in St. Pete Beach, Florida. The client is a world class artist who sculpts exquisite marine fauna and scenery into thick glass using a sandblaster, then lights it all up using colored OLEDs tucked into the frame.

First, I photographed his entire collection for the web site. And let me tell you, shooting lit, colored glass is no picnic. But the final images turned out spectacular. In fact, the artist admitted that he once commissioned a National Geographic photographer who struggled to capture his glass artwork as well. To this day, that is one of the highest compliments I have ever received.

The images turned out so well that we hatched an idea to use them in some kind of animation to introduce the site. Well, I didn’t own the sophisticated workstation and expensive movie software I use today. So I used Photoshop to mask each and every fish, turtle, dolphin, coral, and bubble, then manually animated those still images at 24 frames per second using Flash.

A true labor of love, to say the least. But I think you’ll agree, the end results were a winner.
